When the Fat Lady Sings: Leadership and Creativity in Opera
Wednesday 27 January 2016 12:30-14:00

As part of a great university the school aims to make the wider intellectual richness of Oxford available to its students and staff in various ways. One such way is to engage with issues in the study of the humanities. The work of historians philosophers and classicists and the study of literature and artefacts from many countries and traditions can shed light on challenges that concern business school students. The study and performance of drama and music can develop perspectives on communication that will be valuable in other contexts including the corporate and government worlds.

The business school works with a number of Oxford’s leading humanities scholars in a series of activities to which we give the broad title “Engaging with the Humanities”. This series of events is a part of that and open to all members of the business school community.

The School is happy to welcome Toby Young from the Faculty of Music In Conversation with Clare McCaldin.

In the world of opera many experts work together to create an amazing show: everyone from costume and lighting to singers and conductor need to align their creativity to make a final product that audiences love. There are many valuable lessons to be learned from these relationships that illustrate how leadership works.

Leadership involves coordinating different functions and communicating effectively both inside and outside an organisation. This talk will explore just that: how a system of shifting leadership works to pull together the creativity of the skilled experts in order to generate value for diverse stakeholders.

Expect practical demonstrations from a top-class singer!

Please arrive at the School from 12:00 for lunch from 12:30 with the talk starting promptly at 13:00.

Please note tickets are non-transferable and do let us know if you can no longer attend once you have registered.
